This is my daughter, Maddie.
We lost her in 2015. She's the reason I do this work. I don't want another family to go through what we went through.
Since then I've talked with more than 3,000 parents. Most of them saw something. A kid who stopped coming down for dinner. A bedroom door that stayed closed a bit longer every week. They told themselves it was a phase. Waiting felt safer than asking. I understand that better than I'd like to.
Paying attention is a small thing. It means taking what you've already noticed seriously enough to ask one more question.
